Measurement Parts & Labour

Add additional parts & labour to measurements. These can be quantified using formula based on the measurement totals.

Adding more parts into a measurement

From within a plan:

  1. Either click the Measurement Actions menu next to the desired measurement; or click the measurement name, and then click the Settings menu button on the toolbar;

  2. Click the Parts link;

  3. Click the +Part button;

  4. Click Groundplan Once-off item or the desired item type if you have integrated with another software;

  5. Fill in the Once-off item form:

    • (optional) Part number;
    • Description;
    • Unit of measure - this will populate based on the measurement type, but can be edited to suit;
    • (optional) Unit cost, Markup % and Unit price;
    • Formula - create your own Excel-style formulas. E.g., count*10 is calculating 10m of Cable for each counted switches.
    📝 Please note:

    When creating formulas, each Measurement Type has its own Supported References:
    Length measurement supported references
    Area measurement supported references

  6. Click the Save button;

  7. Repeat for all additional parts within this measurement

💡Tip

To group parts on the Quantities Page, such as cable, clips, etc. that are in multiple measurements. Ensure that the Part No, Description, Unit of Measure, and Cost are all identical, including capitals, spacing, and spelling.

Parts Grouping

To group parts from different measurements together in the Quantites tab by stage. Ensure the following matches exactly, including capitals, spacing, and spelling:

  • Part No (including a blank box);
  • Description;
  • Unit of Measure;
  • Cost (including a blank box);
  • Markup;
⚠️Parts are grouped on creation.

Parts will not merge after you edit their Names/Description and Unit of Measurement to match existing parts.

💡Tip

When copying names, be mindful of spaces at the end of the words. A space at the end of one name and not at the end of another would lead to two entries for this part on the quantities page;

Adding labour to measurements

From within a plan:

  1. Either click the Measurement Actions menu next to the desired measurement; or click the measurement name, and then click the Settings menu button on the toolbar;

  2. Click the Parts link;

  3. Click the +Labour button;

  4. Fill in the Labour form;

    • Description
    • Unit of Measure
    • Unit Cost, Markup %, and Unit Price (optional)
    • Formula - create your own Excel-style formulas to allocate the amount of labour against the measurement. E.g Count * 0.33 is allowing 20 minutes of Labour for each count. Please refer to our Labour Conversion Chart below.
  5. Click the Save button.

  6. Repeat for additional labour types associated to the measurement.

To convert your labour minutes to decimal, all you need to do is divide your minutes by 60.

For example:
15 / 60 = 0.25

💡Tip

To group Labour types on the Quantities Page, such as Labour, Apprentice Labour, etc. that are in multiple measurements. Ensure the description, UOM, and cost are all identical, including capitals, spacing, and spelling.

Labour Grouping

To group labour from different measurements together in the Quantites tab by stage. Ensure the following matches exactly, including capitals, spacing, and spelling:

  • Description
  • UOM
  • Cost
  • Markup

Labour lines will not merge after you edit their names/description, unit of measurement to match existing Labour lines.

Updating Parts and Labour

📝Please Note:

When parts and labour are grouped together, updating the Part number (parts only), Description, UOM or Pricing will also update all the parts and labour it is grouped with in that same stage.

  1. Click on the Worksheet tab;
  2. Jump to the correct stage (if required);
  3. Click on the measurement name;
  4. Either click onto the formula; or click the Actions menu, then click the Edit button.
  5. Make the required changes, then click the Save button

How to fix parts & labour not grouping

If on the creation of the part or labour something has not matched exactly, you will see multiple lines under the same stage on the quantities page.

To resolve these to match we advise taking the following steps:

  1. Find the measurement where the part/labour has not been added identically --- By clicking the + button to the left of the part name, you will see all the measurements included in the parts’ total;
  2. Click on the Measurement Name, then click the Measurement link at the bottom of the pop-up box. This will redirect you to the Edit Measurement page;
  3. Delete the part/labour: Click the actions menu, then click Delete
  4. Add a new part: Click the +Part or +Labour button;
  5. Re-enter the Part number (parts only), Description, UOM, Cost and mark-up to match the Part / Labour you want to Group with.
  6. Click the Save button.

You will then see the measurement added under the part in the Quantities page.

Separate labour or parts incorrectly grouped together

When parts and labour are grouped together, updating the Part number (parts only), Description, UOM or Pricing will also update all the parts and labour it is grouped with in that same stage.

When parts and labour are grouped together, take the following steps from the Quantites tab to seperate them:

  1. Click on the part or labour line
  2. Click on the Measurement to unlink the part from
  3. Click on the Measurement link
  4. Click the Actions menu, and click the Delete button
  5. Either click + Part then click Groundplan Once-off item or the desired item type if you have integrated with another software;
  6. Or click the + Labour button
  7. Fill in the part or labour form ensuring that either the Part number (parts only), Description, UOM or Pricing are different to the origional part.

FAQs

How can I round-off my quantities to its next/last whole number?

A: You can use the references, ceilfor rounding-off to the nearest whole number and floorto the last whole number.

You need to put ceil or floor before the formula that would sit in round brackets - e.g. =ceil(len/1.5).

How can I round-off my quantities to a specific number (i.e. 5), instead of the nearest whole number?

A: Your formula will be =(ceil(count/5))*5.
In this example, you will divide your count/measurement with the whole number that you need to get how many 5s are there. If the count is 4, then the result is 0.80 and its ceiling will be 1. You will then get 5 as the result. Should the count/measurement exceed, 5, say it's 6 this time, you will have 1.20and a ceiling of 2, which will automatically give you 10. This will remain at 10 until your count reaches 11.

Q: I want to round up my total length to its nearest whole number and add 2 meters to the total length as a buffer?

A: You can use the formula: =ceil(len) + min(1,len)*2.
Len is your current total measurement, and using ceil will round that up to the next whole number.
Min (1,count) is a formula that will choose which is less between 1 or the number of lengths you’ve measured. It is there to ensure that if you did not measure anything yet, the default count value is zero 0, thus 0 x 2meters is still equal to 0. However, if you started measuring, and you have, say, 5 meters: min(1,5) is 1, then 1 x 2meters is 2, and so 2m is going to be added to your total length measurement.

Q: How do you measure vertical and inclined areas?

A1: To measure vertically, you can measure from the elevations, adjust an existing measurement to add in the vertical aspect;

A2: You can create a count with the same name as the measurement and add height by adding a formula to the measurement in the worksheet;

A3: For angled surfaces such as a roof from a 2d plan, you can account for the angle/pitch by adding a formula to the measurement in the worksheet.

Measuring Vertically and Inclined Areas

  1. Click Actions button across the measurement name;
  2. Click to select Parts;
  3. Once you're on the Edit Measurement page, click the actions menu across the Part Name and select the Edit option;
  4. Click on the Formula field;
  5. Adjust the formula within the measurement, len multiplied by the pitch (x 1.0833);

    =len * 1.0833

  6. Click the Save button.
  7. Repeat for additional measurements and parts.

Q: Can you measure in m3?

A: Yes

  1. Measure the item using the area tool;
  2. Click the Actions button across the measurement name and select Parts;
  3. Click the Actions button across the Part Name and select the Edit option;
  4. Change UOM to m3;
  5. In the formula box: Multiply the area by the desired thickness, e.g., =area *0.15;

​Q: When applying a formula to a Length or Area, can you have the formula apply to the individual lengths / areas rather than the total?

Q: Can you import Take-off Templates with formula for measurements?

A: Not currently
